Ask ten tennis parents what counts as a "good" junior ranking and, sooner or later, someone says the top 100. It is the number that gets written about, the one attached to the players whose names you already know. So it quietly becomes the anchor — the bar sitting in the back of the mind against which a real child's four-digit ranking gets measured, and found wanting.

That one argues, at length, that there is no official "good" number and that a raw ranking hides more than it reveals — and I stand by every word of it. But parents kept asking a fair follow-up: fine, there's no magic number, but what do the actual numbers look like? So this time I went and looked. Below is the real 2026 distribution, by age and gender. It is both more humbling and more reassuring than the top-100 anchor suggests.

What we are counting, and what we are not

One framing has to come first, because everything else rests on it. Every figure here is drawn from NextPoint's live player data, and it describes only the juniors who already hold an ITF world ranking — a pool of roughly 9,100 players. That clause is not a footnote. It is the entire context.

Because here is what the top-100 anchor quietly skips: most juniors are not in this pool at all. A large share of thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds who compete seriously — who win national events, travel, train every day — do not hold an ITF world ranking yet, and that is completely normal for their age. The international juniors circuit is an under-18 tour, and the ranking only begins to apply as a player ages toward it.

So the very first thing this data says is the one most number-charts never mention: simply holding a world ranking at all is already an achievement. A fourteen-year-old sitting near the middle of the distribution below — a ranking in the low thousands — is not "behind." They are inside a population most of their contemporaries have not entered yet.

The 2026 distribution, by age

Here is the shape of it. For each age and gender, two numbers among that ~9,100: the median ranking — the middle of the ranked pool, the ordinary ranked player at that age — and the top-10% cutoff, the ranking you have to reach to sit among the strongest tenth of ranked juniors your age. Lower is better throughout.

Two reading notes before we interpret anything.

First, these are percentiles within the ranked population — the ~9,100 — not within every junior who plays. The median is not "the average junior." It is the average ranked junior, which is a far higher bar than it sounds, because getting onto the list at all filters out most of the age group.

Second, the two columns answer different questions. The median tells you what ordinary looks like among ranked players that age. The top-10% cutoff tells you where "clearly strong for your age" begins. A fourteen-year-old girl ranked around 3,216 is squarely typical for a ranked player her age; one at 1,460 has reached the top tenth of that same group. If you want to place a specific child, find their age row, and read their number against those two markers — not against the top 100, and not against the kid on the next court, whose event count and travel schedule you cannot see.

"Good for your age" gets better every single year

Read down the columns and the clearest pattern in the whole table appears: every number improves with age, without exception. For girls, the median moves from 3,216 at fourteen to 1,893 at eighteen. For boys, from 3,390 to 1,912. The top-10% line sharpens even more steeply — for girls, from 1,460 down to 395; for boys, from 1,811 to 429. The elite tier does not just improve; it compresses, pulling hard toward the front of the field as the oldest juniors accumulate ranking-worthy results.

This is the reassuring half of the picture, and it matters more than any single row. "Good for your age" is not a fixed target a child is either hitting or missing today. It is a line that slides toward better numbers every year, for everyone, as the youngest players build results and the pool matures around them. There is room to grow into — not a gate that had to be cleared already.

It also carries a quieter warning. Because the whole distribution slides forward, a ranking that stays flat across those years is not holding steady — it is slipping, because the field around it keeps improving even when the number on the screen does not. This is exactly why the evergreen companion piece argues that trajectory matters more than any snapshot. The table you are looking at is a stack of snapshots, and the snapshots keep moving.

A couple of smaller patterns are worth naming, carefully. The boys' figures sit a little higher — a slightly worse number — than the girls' at every age, in both columns, and the two converge almost exactly by eighteen: medians of 1,893 and 1,912, top-10% lines of 395 and 429. I would not read a talent story into that. It most likely reflects how many players hold rankings in each pool and how the fields are shaped, not anything about any individual. And one detail that puts the top-100 anchor firmly in its place: in this data, world No. 1 rankings appear only at ages sixteen and seventeen. The very top of the ladder is real, but it is overwhelmingly a phenomenon of the oldest junior years — not a bar a fourteen-year-old is failing to clear.

What genuinely elite for age actually looks like

It helps to put a face on the top of the distribution, so here is one — fictionalised in name and rounded in its specifics, but true to a real pattern in the data. Call her "Mina," a fourteen-year-old from Korea ranked around 350. Across 2026 she went roughly 40–6, with several titles along the way.

Now set that against her own row. The median ranked fourteen-year-old girl sits near 3,216; the top-10% line is 1,460. Mina, at about 350, is not merely inside the top tenth — she is far beyond it, deep inside the top one percent of ranked players her age. That is what "genuinely elite for age" looks like in 2026: not a top-100 world ranking, which barely exists at fourteen, but a ranking in the mid-hundreds built on a lopsided win–loss record and real titles.

The gap between Mina and the median is the whole point. A parent looking only at the top 100 would file both the median girl and Mina under the same heading — "not there yet." The distribution shows they are in completely different places. One is exceptional for her age; the other is an ordinary, healthy, ranked fourteen-year-old. Neither is a failure. Only one of them is rare, and the ranking chart is the thing that lets you tell which is which.

A ranking is a snapshot, not a verdict

Everything above describes a population on a single pass through the season. It is worth saying plainly what it is not.

It is not a verdict on any individual child. A ranking is a snapshot of a rolling twelve-month window — a photograph of where a player's recent results happen to place them right now, among the ranked pool, on the day you look. It says nothing about how hard they compete, how they lose to stronger players, whether they are climbing or drifting, or what they will become. Two juniors with identical numbers can be on opposite trajectories. The table gives you a yardstick, not a scoreboard, and certainly not a diagnosis.

It also only ever describes the ranked ~9,100. Every percentile here is silent about the large group of juniors — especially the youngest — who hold no ITF ranking yet and are not remotely behind for it. If your child is one of them, this table is not measuring them at all; it is describing the population they may still be growing toward.
